When Eastern instruments meet Western Classicals—what kind of music will spark from the encounter? When Sizhu music is blended into contemporary music, what kind of cross-genre inspiration will it produce?

Seven Taiwanese artists learned of both Eastern and Western music will use seven Asian instruments: Erhu, Di, Pipa, Guzheng, Yangqin, Ruan, and Sheng to perform a repertoire of numerous original pieces. Through creative arrangement and orchestration, they fully utilize Sizhu’s unique characteristics to express traditional sounds in a contemporary way, painting the pieces with a color that exclusively belongs to Taiwanese music.

Established 18 years ago, the Chai-Found Music Workshop is led by the founder Chen-Ming Huang, who is in charge of artistic directing and music composing. Gathering a group of musicians such as Pipa performer Hui-Kuan Lin and Di performer Chung-Hsien Wu, he uses traditional Chinese instruments as a central momentum and created a unique musical space that not only allows performance of Sizhu music, but also provides composers an inspirational platform for experimental music.

The musical program “Made in Taiwan” conserves traditional elements through fully exploiting the distinctive sounds of Eastern instruments, while it also introduces a light of innovation into the genre of folk and world music in its ground-breaking expression of the diversity, vitality, and richness of Taiwanese contemporary music.

Chai-Found Music Workshop has an impressive performance history, having been regularly invited to the world’s many important festivals throughout the years, such as the Barcelon Arts Festival, Spain 1992; Costa Rica Culture Festival, 1998; Hoergaenge Contemporary Music Festival, Austria 2000; Cologne Music Festival, Germany 2001; Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, England 2004; and Festival Dimension in Seoul, Korea 2009.
