TAIWANfest 2025 – Waves of Saudade
August 30 – September 1, 2025 | šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square (formerly known as the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza)
The concept of “saudade” is one that cannot be translated from the original Portuguese, but a feeling that can be understood from different cultural perspectives. Saudade is a deep, bittersweet longing often tied to the Portuguese diaspora. The festival invites audiences to reflect on these shared experiences of departure, resilience, and cultural evolution.
Vancouver TAIWANfest 2025 embarks on a profound exploration of identity, migration, and the emotional landscapes shaped by the ocean’s vast and unrelenting expanse. Moving beyond surface-level narratives of heritage, TAIWANfest delves into the invisible currents that connect communities across continents, tracing the legacies of exploration, colonization, and the human stories that persist beyond borders.
Drawing inspiration from Portugal’s maritime history and its far-reaching influence, the festival provides a lens through which to examine Taiwan and Canada’s own relationship with the sea, migration, and colonial past. Through music, visual art, culinary traditions, and storytelling, Vancouver TAIWANfest 2025 creates an immersive dialogue between Portuguese and Taiwanese diasporas, fostering deeper intercultural understanding. From the mournful strains of Fado entwined with Taiwanese folk melodies to the intricate artistry of azulejos juxtaposed with Taiwan’s indigenous storytelling traditions, each artistic interpretation serves as a vessel for audiences to navigate themes of belonging and transformation.
Beyond artistic showcases, the festival presents thought-provoking conversations on reconciliation, the impact of colonial legacies, and how history might have unfolded differently with today’s understanding of social justice. Community-led storytelling sessions amplify the voices of Portuguese- and Taiwanese-Canadians, while culinary workshops illuminate the historical ties between the two cultures through shared seafood traditions. Public space programming ensures accessibility and inclusivity, reinforcing TAIWANfest’s role as a platform for meaningful cultural exchange.
The festival will also explore linguistic evolution within diaspora communities in Canada, particularly in relation to Portugal’s influence across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Portuguese, once a key language of trade and administration, continues to echo in creole languages and borrowed vocabularies in Taiwan and across former colonial territories. Through artistic and academic exchanges, TAIWANfest will examine how colonial history shaped linguistic and cultural identities in places like Macau, Goa, and Brazil, drawing parallels with Taiwan and Canada’s own experiences of multilingualism and cultural negotiation.
By inviting audiences to reflect on how the ocean shapes identity—not just as a physical barrier, but as a bridge connecting histories, emotions, and futures—Vancouver TAIWANfest 2025 redefines Canada’s multicultural narrative, creating a space where the echoes of the past meet the possibilities of the future.
